Burma Rights successfully concluded an intensive, four-day Advanced Digital Security and Operational Safety Workshop on 21 to 24 December 2025. The training brought together 20 (11 Male, 5 Female, and 4 LGBTIQ) dedicated human rights documenters, strike committee members, and community leaders from various townships, including Pale, Kantbalu, Kalay, Myaung, and Watt Let. The cohort reflected a strong commitment to diverse and inclusive representation, actively engaging women and LGBTIQ activists who are leading non-violent movement campaigns on the ground.

Operating under highly volatile conditions, including localized armed clashes and volatile communication networks, the workshop focused on moving beyond basic digital literacy toward establishing a comprehensive, holistic security mindset. Participants engaged in rigorous practical sessions covering counter-surveillance infrastructure, secure data lifecycle management, and tactical safety protocols required to navigate high-risk environments and physical checkpoints safely.

Key Highlights & Learning Outcomes:

  • Holistic Security Integration: Activists analyzed the critical link between digital footprints and physical vulnerabilities, shifting their daily practices to minimize exposure to evolving surveillance mechanisms.

  • Advanced Data Lifecycle Management: The training successfully addressed major baseline knowledge gaps, equipping participants with localized skills in data encryption, secure data movement, and absolute data destruction protocols.

  • Network Defenses: Participants actively strategized on protecting wider activist networks, emphasizing the necessity of end-to-end encrypted platforms and secure virtual private networks (VPNs) when coordinating across lines.

"We learned that a digital footprint goes far beyond our faces. The objects, schools, and landforms in our campaign photos can be traced. This workshop has completely changed how we handle our media campaigns."
