In the face of severe operational challenges, Burma Rights successfully concluded an intensive, four-day Advanced Digital Security and Operational Safety Workshop. Held from December 25 to 28, 2025, the specialized training brought together 21 dedicated community leaders, frontline human rights documenters, strike committee members, and civil society organization (CSO) representatives from across Magway, Pakokku, Minbu, and Kamma townships.

The training was successfully executed under highly volatile conditions, including localized armed clashes and unpredictable communication networks. Given the escalating risks faced by local actors, the workshop looked past basic digital literacy, focusing instead on establishing a comprehensive, holistic security mindset.

Over the four-day period, thirteen male and eight female participants engaged in rigorous, hands-on practical sessions designed for immediate field application. The curriculum directly addressed the modern threats faced by civil society.

Key Highlights & Learning Outcomes:

  • Holistic Security Integration: Activists analyzed the critical link between digital footprints and physical vulnerabilities, shifting their daily practices to minimize exposure to evolving surveillance mechanisms.

  • Advanced Data Lifecycle Management: The training successfully addressed major baseline knowledge gaps, equipping participants with localized skills in data encryption, secure data movement, and absolute data destruction protocols.

  • Network Defenses: Participants actively strategized on protecting wider activist networks, emphasizing the necessity of end-to-end encrypted platforms and secure virtual private networks (VPNs) when coordinating across lines.

“As the military continues extensively in oppressing in both physical and on digital platform by gradually updating its investigation system, we would like to request the organizer and the trainer to organize such training regularly to provide updates.”
