About us
Burma Rights Organization (BR) is an independent and non-profit organization that works in local governance, peace and reconciliation, non-violence strategies, digital security training, and human rights documentation. It also provides sub-grants, including emergency funds, to local partners across Myanmar/ Burma and border areas.
Background:
Myanmar Political Context and BR’s Contribution
Since the military coup in February 2021, Myanmar has descended into a profound human rights and governance crisis. The junta’s violent seizure of power has triggered widespread armed conflict, economic collapse and the dismantling of democratic institutions. A military regime has committed systematic violations across the country, including arbitrary arrests, airstrikes on civilians, destruction of infrastructure and suppression of independent civil society.
In this context, Burma Rights (BR) emerged as a vital actor. Established in 2022 and BR has provided essential support to Human Rights Defenders (HRDs), Media Organizations, Research Based Organization, Strike Committees, Youth and Women Organizations and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) from across the country including Thai – Myanmar Border, Bangladesh – Myanmar Border and India – Myanmar border, who are working on the frontlines of democratic resistance.
